Driver age

Most companies ask for 21–25 as a minimum.

Young drivers may pay an extra daily fee, and premium cars can have a higher minimum age. Always check the terms.

Documents

Bring your licence and a credit card.

The main driver usually needs a credit card in their name for the deposit. Some countries also require an International Driving Permit.

Deposit

An amount is held on your card.

It isn't a charge. It's released after you return the car without damage, which can take a few days.

Insurance & excess

Basic cover usually has an excess.

If the car is damaged you pay up to a set amount. You can reduce or remove it with extra cover.

Fuel & mileage

"Full to full" is usually the best value.

Pick it up full, return it full. Check whether mileage is unlimited before you book.

Extras

Child seats and extra drivers cost more.

They're often charged per day, so add them up and compare the total price.

Is it cheaper at the airport or in the city?

City locations can be cheaper because airport surcharges don't apply, but airport pick-up is often more convenient. Compare both.

Do I need a credit card?

Most companies require a credit card for the deposit. A few accept debit cards with extra conditions.

When is the cheapest time to rent?
